Hana Maui

"An experience, not a destination"

Hana Maui advice from an experienced Maui resident including the Road to Hana, Where to stay in Hana, Hana beaches, Hana restaurants, Red Sand beach, 7 pools and driving around Hana!

The Road to Hana!

The road to Hana is one of the most beautiful drives in the United States! I love Hana, be cautious though, if you make the drive to Hana without planning, you will likely be miserable by the end of it. Hana is 2 to 3 hours drive time each way by car depending on where you start! It will take you longer if you stop and sightsee along the way which I highly recommend. When I go to Hana, I stay from one night to a full week. Soul searchers will find no better place on the planet. Nice swimming, hiking, waterfalls, sky and solitude. Kids and adults who don't do well in a car for extended trips would do well to skip this one. It rains at least lightly every day.

Hana Highway do's.

Pre-plan your trip to Hana with this great Hana highway description! Start with a full tank of gas at Kahului! If you are prone to motion sickness, stop and go back to Longs for some motion sickness med's. Now call ahead to schedule a good nights rest or romantic getaway while in Hana. Do stop at the roadside fruit stands, you can stretch your legs and the locals are extremely friendly and can help you find less common fruits and veggies. Also make sure to stop at Twin Falls along the way, and at Waianapanapa state park and hike around and check out the black sand beach, caves and blow hole.

Hana Hotels, lodgings and cottages?

Hana's Tradewind Cottages

check online to book with Hana's Tradewind Cottages or give them a call. The Tradewinds feature two cabin style fully appointed homes a one and a two bedroom that will fit your needs. They are located away from the beach however they are in a tropical flower plantation. They both have outdoor private hot tubs with metal roof covering them. When it rains, and it will, the sound of the rain, the taste of the wine, the glow of the candle...need I say more! Great prices. (800) 327-8097

Aloha Cottages

Aloha Cottages are located in central Hana and close to Hotel Hana Maui, Hana Ranch store, Hasagawa's, Hana Bay and Red Sand beach. Mrs Nakamura has clean and very inexpensive partial house rentals. We paid $90 for a night (2 people, 2beds, kitchen, bath, living room and wireless internet signal strong enough for a good connection if needed we were very pleased. Checkout is 10:45 and Online reviews say they don't put up with late checkouts. We left at 9am and had nothing but smiles from the Nakamura's...Aloha (808)248-8420

Kipahulu Campground

The state park at Kipahulu has many wonderful adventures as well as a simple campground 40 minutes past Hana. For the adventurous, this is perhaps the best option. You are right at the ocean, the "seven pools" or Oheo Gulch, and Pipiwai trail head. It will rain although not always heavily, be prepared.

Hotel Hana Maui

Hotel Hana Maui is the way I picture old hawaii at the start of the tourism business in the Islands. Aloha is found here and the hotel itself is top notch.

Red Sand Beach, Hana Waterfalls, now what do I do?

Relax and do nothing - Read, go for a walk, talk or don't, sit and look at the clouds or the ocean. When you're bored, ask yourself why? Perhaps you need to slow down a little and enjoy solitude!

Or, head up to Waimoku falls and the 7 Pools- In Kipahulu, 40 minutes from Hana, the Pipiwai trail is an awesome 4 mile round trip and 650 feet elevation gain to a 400 ft (Maui's largest hiking accessible) waterfall coming down the face of lava rock. Round trip through a bamboo forest takes 1.5 to 3 hours depending on you! Shorter hike to Makahiku falls is 186 feet and only 1/2 mile up Pipiwai trail. Warning, flash floods during moderate to heavy rain. Do Not stand under waterfall due to possible falling rocks! Wear sturdy shoes due to slippery rocks and mud. Use bug spray for mosquitoes.

Go to Town - and talk story with some of the locals for historic info and great conversation, or check out the many churches.

Hana Red Sand Beach

Hana's Red Sand Beach is only for the adventurous as you will have to cross Private land and slippery conditions! Bring a good towel as the "sand" is loose red volcanic cinder. Every time I go here I have encountered very interesting and harmless people with much aloha. Try the little lava tub where the ocean is separated from the calm water. I avoid the open ocean waters here due to rough conditions and rip tides! Hwy 360 will split just entering Hana into Hwy 31 and Uakea Rd. Go left onto Uakea Rd and continue until dead end. Turn around and park on street. Walk towards ocean thru the open field and go right thru the tall grass at one of the openings. continue towards the ocean and when you get to the path just above the ocean go left and continue until dead end...You're there! Park at N20-45'08.5" W155-59'02.7" The Beach is N20-45'08.7" W155-58'53.5"

Koki Beach

Koki Beach is a great little beach with stunning views of the Hana cliffs and with a great contrast of the blue Pacific against the black lava. Hwy 31 south of Hana, go left on Haneoo Rd, Beach is first beach on left. GPS N20-43'41.1" W155-59'07.3"

Hamoa beach

Hamoa Beach is owned by Hotel Hana Maui, it is well cared for with restrooms. The water is stunningly beautiful and shallow for quite a ways out. Hwy 31 south of Hana, go left on Haneoo Rd continue past Koki beach and around the point to a bus stop on left. path is east of bus stop. GPS N20-43'12.3" W155-59'12.1"

What Hana Restaurants are there?

Hana Ranch Store Restaurant - Local food on a budget.

Hotel Hana Maui - Delicious varied cuisine. Expensive.

Paniolo Lounge, Hotel Hana Maui - The only bar with entertainment in Hana. Open till 10pm serving cocktails and Pupu's

Rental car blues.

I can't advise you to travel past Hana in a rental vehicle if you're afraid of the rental agency contract. I highly recommend this route out of Hana if you aren't worried about it though! I have driven small cars, jeeps and a street motorcycle with two passengers on it this route, and never even got close to being stuck. In my opinion the road past Hana is more beautiful than the road to Hana. It is a whole different view of the desert side of Maui as well as her southern shores. There are high mountain views of La Perouse, Makena, Kaho'olawi and Molokini crater. Make sure to stop by Maui's own Tedeschi Winery between mile marker 14 and 15 on highway 31.

Warning! The road past Hana is only good if rains are light to non-exist ant as the south side does flood with steady moderate to heavy rain and you will have to turn around. There are no gas stations past Hana until Makawao, and only one in Hana. So fill up if you're planning to go around the east side. Drive slowly, the road is narrow and there is often no sight distance around cliffs.
